  • A very small step into the career of gig organising.. (and perhaps music reviewing!)

So.. me, Jeri and Charlotte had the big-ass idea of putting on gigs so we could meet cool bands. The first thing we knew we needed though was money. Luckily we remembered that Mr Panton, the business teacher, had access to an enterprise fund so we could afford to pay the bands and advertising etc.
We are actually planning a gig for charity now in October! It's so exciting. We haven't settled on a date yet as we're waiting for the main band, The Rumur, to get back to us on a date that they're available. I don't actually think they believe us, seeing as a) we're 14/15, and b) it's at someone's frickin' school. So far though we have heard that two other bands, Chimps With Lipstick, and Charlotte's friend Tobias' band. We're going to have to audition them first, to see if they're 'appropriate' to play in front of our school-only under-16 audience. Not that I find much 'adult' stuff inappropiate or unsuitable for me anyway. It doesn't influence me really.
It'll be in the new drama studio (which hasn't finished being built yet!) which fits 100 people, so I guess we're starting off small, as we should.
Jeri also found out that we could hold some at the Plough (the local theatre) if we worked in conjunction with the booking manager, and that all the profit goes back into the theatre fund, henceforth the more money we make the bigger the bands we could book as they get more expensive. We're going to go and find out more next week I think.
It's like the dream job, except we're not making any money yet. It will be an amazing experience I think, to see all your hard work pay off on the night, and to feel like a VIP pottering around backstage all the time. To carry on, I think we'll have to wait and see how it goes first. I've learnt that a lot of this organising thing contains a lot of wait-and-seeing, because you have to talk to so many people about each part of the night, from the bands to security through to supervision. In the end though I think that makes the whole organising experience better because there's a lot of suspense, and you can see each part being pieced together when someone says 'yeah, I'll do it'.
If only I did this for work experience..

-listening to - Johnny Come Last - The Fratellis
Surely the best band on the plnaet at this moment in time? Their appearance at Glastonbury last night was phenomenal, as is their fantastic new album Here We Stand. It starts off with a cracker, My Friend John, complete with escalating bongos and a championistic riff before their typically silly lyrics take off. As Q says, it finds singer Jon in self-analysis mode, with the lyrics 'my friend John was a serious one/ buttoned up the back and a job half done'.
Track 2, A Heady Tale, is an amazing introduction to the band's new addition of piano. Lovely spangly piano builds up to continue with surging guitars, up to the whimsical stomping chorus. It just makes you want to dance round and round in circles.
Shameless, the next song, perhaps has some of the cleverest lyrics on the album, focussed on the frustration of so many young bands that are at the same stage that they are at now, even with the 10 year age difference. It has an amazing crunchy riff to begin with, but in my opinion it isn't the best song on the album.
Look Out Sunshine! is to be the band's next single. I can see why, it is incredibly singalong in the scream-along-while-no-one's-home vein, and that's what the people like about and expect from The Fratellis.
Here, at track number 5, it seems that The Fratellis are musical magpies with the Pink Floyd-esque Straggler's Moon, which Jon says is his favourite. It has charring guitars to begin with and a soft chant of 'she can't help it, the girl can't help it', until it progresses to an effectively tapped out verse and swirly, psychedelic leads in the chorus, it is one of those summer songs.
The lead single from the album so far, Mistress Mabel, is often dubbed as the bridge between Costello Music and this album, and so be it. It has the nonsensical rooftop singalongability of the first album, yet the hammering piano and hidden progressive maturity of Here We Stand.
I have dubbed Jesus Stole My Baby the 'Doginabag' of Here We Stand, seeing as they both take a long time to grow on you and when they do you realise just how amazing they are. It's been a while since they brung out the harmonica and it really helps add to the bluesy atmosphere of the song.
Babydoll, the eighth track, is an incredibly sweet semi-acoustic gem. When the lead comes in over the top, it raises up the fragile voice of the verse, and it is ultimately a song that makes you feel allw arm and tingly inside.
Straight after that comes the rock crunch of Tell Me A Lie, which I think over time will become one of those crowd favourites, with shouts of "Ah ah ah ah ahhh" over the riff and "He's a liar! He's a liar!" in the somewhat Kasabian-esque chorus. The verse reminds me of Creepin' Up The Backstairs a little, with a frantic guitar lead and bass line.
Another semi-acoustic singalong, Acid Jazz Singer, follows with more tales of drunkeness and girls. I think I could sing this at a campfire and get away with it.
The penultimate song, Lupe Brown, has a cracking introduction which somehow reminds me of an Irish jig, I don't know why! The lyrics in this one are OK, but ultimately it's the mighty guitar solos that weave in and out of it that make the song.
Milk and Money is left til last but definitely not least. It starts off on intimate piano and soon leaves shivers up your spine. After the second chorus drums, bass, guitar, piano and keyboard collide towards hysteria, before echoing back to the piano of the beginning. It's there to make you think wow.

  • Unintended discoveries.. (originally written 24/5/08)

Finally, I've found some time to write to my blog. Not that I've been busy, more.. lazy I think.
Sunday was a total adventure. Carly phoned and we met up and walked our dogs down the lane where I always go. This time though we let the dogs off the lead (Bobs was acting a total nutter) and went a little further down the lane. Carly wanted to see the river so we sat on the bridge over the river and Diesel swam in the river while lazy Bobs just paddled. After that we went about 2 metres further than the bridge to find an open gate that had always been shut when I had seen it before. So this time, I couldn't pass up the chance to not see what was on the other side before it was locked again.
It was actually a bit stupid of me to wear flip-flops and boardies that day. Past the gate was a grassy field and I got stung by a few odd nettles at times. After that, parts of the deep river to wade across. At least I wasn't wearing trainers like Carly, coz hers got all wet and squelchy.
We came across the old, but very narrow train track. To be honest, I can see why it's not used anymore. It's built right next to the river with no barriers between them, and on a windy day the tiny train obviously used to fit on the track would get blown off into the river, and the passengers on it would die. Note to self: Torrington's ancestors must be pygmies.

That was all last week and since then I've faced the exam lark and the huge backlash of coursework we get as a result of 'becoming' year 11s. The science exam was hard, and the RE exam bloody hurt. My hand ached so badly afterwards. But now I am focussing on my major project for Graphics, which I really should be working on right now.. maybe later, right?

Last week was pretty blissful, from Friday onwards. Devon County Show was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Saw some turkeys going gobblegobblegobble, held a cockroach and a giant snail, and collected a load of free junk (apart from the free Muller Corner, that was good!). We also watched the freestyle motorcross and Katherine got the riders to sign her poster afterwards.
Friday evening I went to go and see Jeremy Hardy's stand-up show. It was very very funny, a few things I didn't understand, mainly political, but most of the people there were adults anyway. Megan seemed to have a good time. Some very funny quotes I recall, perhaps a bit too rude for me to say!
On Saturday, I worked, so nothing special. Some food exploded in the microwave, so a little change to my routine there, but merely a distraction to stop me peeling the potatoes.
Sunday was the best Sunday ever. Me, Jeri, Steff and Charlotte headed out for a spot of shopping in Exeter before our excellent night. I bought a Talking heads CD, and we stopped for lunch in Starbucks, and then sat out on the green listening to the funniest laugh ever.
After driving round the roundabout lots and lots of times, we got to Exeter university for the One Night Only gig. We ended up round the back, and met two great new mates, Grace and Rosalie. We then all decided we'd try and sneak in through the back entrance. Got into the corridor, One Night Only's lead singer George Craig comes out and says hello! Then he walked into the main room, leaving us all starstruck, and kicked out by security. I think everyone else died on the spot.
After all that it was only 5.15, so we hung out around the back some more, and saw the Wallbirds, one of the support acts, who I had seen twice before, hanging around by their tourbus. Plucking up confidence, I dragged everyone down to say hello to them. Jeri needed a straitjacket. They were dead nice, posed for pictures and all. Me and Jeri then gave them the bracelets we made and Walt, who is like super hot, kissed me and Jer on the cheek. My heart melted then.. ahhhhh..
It turned 6 so we headed round to the front to queue up to get in. We traded numbers, took pictures, and pratted around. There were 2 dudes who were behind us, Joe and Andy (Joe was hot too) who climbed up the wall and peered through the windows and sat on the rails. I laughed so much when Andy grinded imself up and down the railings, did he not feel pain?
After that we went to speak to Pip the photographer, who was sat down on the step with a nosebleed, poor dude, and Joe told us about some of his gruesome accidents.

About 7.45 we got into the venue, dashed to the front, and were in the middle to start with. The Rumur came on at about 8.15, they were proper amazing for an unsigned band, the whole crowd was jumping. They did Devon proud that's for sure.
Next, the Wallbirds came on, wearing our bracelets, waving to us as they did. I was so so happy then. As they started off with My Boots and carried on with their set, they kept smiling and winking at us. It was such a great feeling.
A bit later on I screamed out "VALENTINE!!!!!", my fave song by them.
And then they said "This next song is called Valentine."
I can't believe it, they played a song for me. I blew them lots of lovely kisses back as gratitude.
The crowd were getting thirsty so the Wallbirds threw bottles of water at us. Directly at us. That was good.
At the end of their set Walt lent down and gave me their setlist. Chris also tried to give me a drumstick but I was too short and the girl next to me ended up getting it. I was totally buzzing.
That was all before One Night Only came on. It was mental. We threw the bracelets we made for them onto the stage but none of them noticed and the evil tech guy took them. We started a shower party of our own throwing bottles of water everywhere. George was indeed gorgeous that night, in lovely white skinny jeans. Mmmm..
The encore, he came on alone and played Sweet Sugar. The rest of the band came on to play Just For Tonight, pandemonium. I bruised my chestbone as we drifted several metres to the right.
At the end of the show we hung out around the bar and the Wallbirds signed my setlist. As we left the venue we headed round the back to find Charlotte's mum parked in her car. She said we could stay til 11.30, and that was enough to wait for One Night Only to come out. I got a picture with gorgeous George and the whole band signed my ticket. It was a great night just about to end, with The Wallbirds giving us hugs and high fives goodbye, and Walt doing Steff's dare of kissing Charlotte's mum on the lips, which I really wish happened to me now.
    Brilliant night.
Today in IT I saw a picture of Chris playing at London's ULU wearing our bracelet. I was so happy.
We'll go see all the bands again once they head down South. ONO in Plymouth, the Rumur in Torquay and the Wallbirds wherever they're playing in the South West again.

  • Good times, bad times

First off, Air Traffic were amazing (good times obviously). We left home at 5.30, and after lots of driving around and asking students for directions we got there at about 6.40. Only 3 people were there before us. Come 7.40, when the doors opened, I got in straight away and ended up waiting for Lauren, who had got lost in the queue. We ran to the front centre, after I insisted to Lauren that the moshpit would not be THAT bad.
The Wallbirds came on, gosh they were brilliant. I'd seen them before so I was the only one singing along to all the words. And we're seeing them again in 2 weeks exactly seeing them supporting One Night Only :D.
Team Waterpolo were the second support group, and they were really good to dance to. I knew their single 'Letting Go' and the b-side to it 'Problematic Girls' so I was singing along to them too.
Air Traffic, well what can I say, so so worth waiting for. I have a big grin on my face just writing about it. There was a big wait before they came on, which wasn't until just after 10, bam! straight into Charlotte, during which I phoned Charlotte and let her listen in to the song. I think she enjoyed it as much as I did! After that I don't remember the particular order, but they played all of the album apart from Your Fractured Life, a couple of b-sides (An End To All Our Problems was particularly ace), Come On and other new songs such as Take Your Hands Off Me, which I enjoyed lots. Lauren did her best to take a couple of decent videos, which I posted at www.youtube.com/hannahjay93 , some of them are however ruined by the blokes behind us pushing us around and screaming "I WANT YOUR BABIES!" after every song. This girl next to Lauren got so fed up of them saying it she screamed "SHUT THE FUCK UP!", so that was funny.
They came back for an encore of 3 songs, first of all the brilliant Empty Space, only ruined by the chanting guys behind me but I ignored that as much as possible and my eyes were brimming with tears of pride and joy. Next they played Suffragette City, a David Bowie cover, the only song they could agree on apparently. That went hugely well compared to the night before when they said they'd "fucked it up" and it all mounted to a very moshworthy Shooting Star, their biggest hit to date, which everyone was singing along to.
When I walked out of the venue never had my ears hummed with tinnitus or my mind buzzed with happiness so much in my life. Me and Lauren talked about it all the way home, with Lauren coming to the conclusion that she wanted Jim's (the bass player from Air Traffic) babies.
On Friday I attended Nanny's wake. It wasn't as solemn as I thought it would be, the afternoon's entertainment provided by Scoob, who was performing magic tricks with pub glasses.
I missed Mayfair due to working so I was glad that on Saturday I didn't have to work in the evening and I got to go to the carnival and saw all my mates for the first time since Wednesday. I watched the carnival with Megan, Carly and Jourdan, who lives across the way from Megan. We mercilessly mocked Lauren on her little Viking float.
Lauren gave me a hint as to what she might have been a few days before. She said 'they wear brown shirts', I automatically said hillbilly. My reason? Well, obviously, their shirts are brown after rolling around in mud!
After the carnival we went to the fair, and we all put our money together so we could all go on the rides. The Rhythm Dancer, that fucking hurt. And the waltzers gave me a bruise in my back. Today the rides are £1 each, n

  • Let's make some noise..

..The other day, in the form of a racket in Jeri's attic. We actually started the whole 'band' thing. And we recorded covers. COVERS!? I know, I even had an idea for a song of our own. But with covers, you can't show them to anyone, upload them to Myspace or anything, coz some PR folk's gunna sue your butt. Maybe it's a good thing no one has heard us yet. When we get better and play to people our own stuff people will be surprised how good we turned out.
Shame we've got quite a long way to go. Jeri's got a few timing issues to sort out, whilst I'm not too sure about my voice. When we played it back after recording my voice didn't sound like what it does in my head and I didn't like it. Anyways we had fun. Jeri's attic is like our own studio, it's fabuloso. She's got a gazillion guitars, keyboards and drums, not to forget the little MacBook where we can record things on.

More recently we made sad noises. Yesterday we cried. My nan, who I knew had 3 types of cancer, seemed to be getting worse and falling asleep lots. My mum came off the phone when I got home and she had been called for the hospice that cares for my nan. Mum told me that nanny only has a few days to live. About an hour later we got a lift in with my aunt and my cousin to see her, for me possibly the last time. She looked so poorly, so pale and tired and small in the bed that grampy had moved downstairs to the living room. She didn't say much and occasionally kept drifting off. Sometimes I could feel the tears collecting in my eyes but I had to swallow them back and put on a brave face, I didn't want her to see me sad. I couldn't bring myself to do that at the end. It was so so horrible saying goodbye when we left coz I knew that when I see her again she'll probably be in a coffin.

On Thursday I'll be watching other people make noises. I'm going to see Air Traffic, who finally after request after request are playing at the Lemon Grove, the student's union at Exeter University. The Wallbirds and Team Waterpolo are supporting. Should be a good night, hopefully.

  • The day of downloads..

Even though the website is as slow as hell, eMusic are giving away 25 free mp3s when you sign up, so I thought I'd give it a go. Currently I'm downloading The Raconteurs' 'Consolers of The Lonely', I've just downloaded Team Waterpolo's single, seeing as I'm seeing them next week supporting Air Traffic. And the lovely Wallbirds too. Gosh I'm so excited.
And finally, I've started downloading episodes of Drew Carey's Green Screen Show. It's brilliant, such a shame they don't show it on British TV and that the whole thing got cancelled. Meg likes it too, especially when Colin 'gave birth' to Drew twins. Shame each episode is about 180mb and it takes about an hour to download each show, even though each show is only about 20 minutes long. At the moment I've downloaded 2. 10 more to download and then I have the whole series, in much higher quality than the episodes uploaded to Youtube (obviously because of the 100mb size limit on that).

  • I'm in charge, so do as I say..

That's right, I got to boss everyone around at work last night. Well, just Ian and Jeri. I'm surprised they did what I said since I'm younger than both of them. And when they didn't, well I just said the magic words "I'm in charge, so you have to do as I say!".
Me and Jeri are going to form a BAND apparently. Christ, it does sound fun and all but I am incredibly shy! I've never played guitar in front of anyone except my friends, after all my parents would grin like idiots(seriously embarrassing)and everyone else would heckle me. Unless I sing.. but nobody knows I can sing. I taught myself. I may have taught myself to sing badly. I think I would rather not know if I was bad, well wouldn't everyone? People just can't resist being mean to each other, I know I can't. We're gunna meet up on Thursday to write the songs, which I'm sort of dreading. I'm crap at writing songs. All the ones I've written are crap. I'm just hoping Jeri can do better than me.
    Wish me luck.

  • Is it Tuesday today?

I've lost track of the time. Out of the routine of 5 days of school and the weekend off. Today I'm pretty sure it's Tuesday, if it isn't then it's either Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Shopping for my holiday with my mum and my sister. I love the fact that the clothes for the holiday were all bought using Mum's creditcard. Though she wouldn't buy this month's copy of Q for me. What a grumpus.
Chelsea saw me in PRIMARK today, with the added bonus that I was by the underwear section. Dear oh dear. Oh well, I did get a pair of flip-flops from there. £2, a rip-off compared to the 50p pointy shoes I got from there last year that Jeri absolutely ADORED. She didn't believe me when I said they were from Primark.

The Air Traffic forum isn't working. It says please post if you have any problems, helpful as my problem is that it is NOT letting me post. Frustrating. Huff.

  • I can't believe I'm actually making an effort..

Usually I just give up. Nothing much has happened in the couple of hours since I published my last submission. I had a roast dinner. And I tried to reason with Terry again after last night. Right at the end of the conversation he says he can't make it into town on Thursday, and that was at 12.45am. I needed to sleep. So I asked him which day he could come in to town when I woke up. His response? 'I don't know I'll check'. 2 hours later he still hasn't said. Come on, how long does it take to check a calendar or whatever?! Bastard. Last night he hastily texted me to tell me that the world's ugliest human had escaped and that in order to claim the $2m reward for finding them I needed to tell him where I was. How nice. I can't believe that's higher in his list of priorities than telling me when we can meet up. Before you ask, I'm not going out with him.
We're meant to be going to see Horton Hears A Who, since he was like 'what the hell is Son Of Rambow?', who knows if it's on the cards now. Carly's meant to be coming too. I'm meant to tell her we have changed the day we're going from Thursday to.. some other day. But I haven't yet, since I don't know when we actually are going. I can just imagine it, on Thursday she'll be waiting at the bus stop going 'where the hell are they?' and then she'll try to phone me and I probably won't pick it up because it's on vibrate mode and I won't hear it go off.
    Oh dear.

  • Long time no type.

I can't give off the excuse that I've been busy as my reason for not writing to my blog for so long. I just can't be bothered, until today, well there's nothing else to do!

It's just the beginning of the Easter holidays, even though Easter was about 2 weeks ago. Not really much of a holiday though, I have a lot of coursework to do.
Not that I hate school. It's just the work you get set to do when you're not there. The homework has nothing to do with what you were taught in the lesson! And as if that isn't bad enough, the ones that actually bother to do the work actually get set more work in the form of an extension task. How rewarding. Rant over (I think).

Wednesday at school was a bit strange. It was a bit of a ghost town. 3/4 of our year had gone up to London (or, as we say in Devon, Lendin) to learn about Jack the Ripper. 6 hours sat on a bus either way. Thank god I didn't take History. It was quite enjoyable with so few of us, I could actually get a word in edgeways. Oh, and we got given cake. That also made things better.

On Thursday Jeri called, asking if I wanted to meet her the next day. What sounded like 'the beach' on the phone, actually turned out to be 'the bead shop'. There was me, with my bike ready to cycle on the Tarka Trail to Instow, and Jeri was giving me a strange look, like 'what've you got your bike for? you only live a 10 minute's walk away from town!' sort of look. It was a bit of a nuisance to be honest. First of all the bike fell over in the street blocking the pavement when I left it outside the shop, so I had to go pick it up every 3 minutes, and then I had to lug it home after a not-so-successful recording session at Jeri's place, which by the way is at the bottom of the steepest street in the world. Along with the bike though I brung home the bracelet I made with the beads we bought, which has bells on it! Everyone can hear me coming now!

Yesterday I listened to the lovely Colin Mochrie interview on blogtalkradio whilst stuffing my face with Fruit Allsorts. Go listen to it if you haven't already - http://www.blogtalkradio.com/OLIVIA
Or even better, download it so you can listen to it over and over again wherever you go! It's just 2 hours of lovelyness.

I've been in quite a good mood this week. Only 3 weeks and 5 days til I go and see Air Traffic, and my Envy & Other Sins CD and Whose Line DVDs arrived. Step Across is one kick-ass song, I'm telling you that.
As for the DVDs well, they didn't arrive at my house. They arrived at the local Post Office, and I had to pay an extra 12 QUID in customs fees before I could receive it. Stupid government, £4 of it was fricking VAT. But at least it worked in my DVD player, I was worried that it wouldn't because it was a different region, but I seem to have cracked the region-free code for now! And in conclusion I say that paying £35 for both the DVDs was finally worth it.
